The State University of New York at Oneonta is seeking qualifications from design firms/teams for the abatement and demolition of the SEMO underground bunker. The intent of this project is to remove this building from the campus Physical Space Inventory. The scope of work will include removal of all existing building materials, mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment under full abatement conditions. Known as Building #052, with a usable square footage of approx. 9,800sf, constructed below grade, of structural concrete in the 1960s. This Civil Defense Communications Center was one of six fallout shelters erected in different parts of New York State. It was designed to serve as an emergency state capitol in case of a catastrophe. It became a storage space for SUCO in later years. During early 2000s two underground fuel tanks were removed. In 2016, Watts Environmental performed a materials analysis survey to determine whether hazardous materials were present within the structure.
