Site work for a development in New Market, Virginia. Working plans call for site work for a development.

The Institute has conducted a pre-planning Study. The study is available at www.vmi.edu/planning. The selected A/E firm for this project is in the initial stages of Schematic Design. The mission of the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park (NMBSHP) is to perpetuate the battle site as a memorial to the valor of the Virginia Military Institute Cadets in the Battle of New Market and to preserve and interpret the military and social history of the Shenandoah Valley, circa 1858-1868. The buildings and surrounding landscape at this location serve as a museum showcasing the local Civil War history of this site. Proposed improvements to the 20,499-SF NMBSHP and VMCW and its 1,260-SF maintenance building include comprehensive renovations to the VMCW to include partial roof replacement, new Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) systems, evaluation of the facility for hazmat and mitigation and/or removal of hazmat, replacements of interior finishes, window and building skin evaluation and replacement as needed, and improvements to the exterior landscaping. Improvements to the maintenance building include new MEP systems, repair, or replacement of the roof, and building skin evaluation and replacement, as necessary. Proposed improvements to the 4,503-SF Bushong House include replacement of the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system as well as the electrical and plumbing systems as needed, renovations and rework of the interior and basement of the house to remove modern day intrusions, and a building skin evaluation and replacement or repairs as needed to roof, windows and wood frame/siding. Proposed improvements to the existing original log cabin structure are intended to rehabilitate it to its original form. Improvements to the existing walking and driving trails will require conversion to an all-weather surface as well as creation of new, all-weather, driving trails and pull-off locations with interpretive signage to enhance the visitor experience. Target Goal: Under Executive Order 35, July 3, 2019 Cabinet Secretaries and all executive branch agencies have been directed to continue and advance the following on a race and gender neutral basis: Exceed a target goal of 50% of all capital outlay spending with small businesses certified by DSBSD. The finished facilities arising from this project will house the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and all the associated artifacts, firearms, original art work and original military uniforms and equipment. The facility will also serve as a teaching space during student field trips for grades K-12, student fieldwork during college courses and during battlefield staff rides conducted by various military units or military history groups. Additionally the space will be use extensively during living history displays, re-enactments or demonstrations of Civil War era operations such as medical care, artillery demonstrations or re-enactments of military drills and camp life.
