The City and County of Honolulu (City) Department of Transportation Services (DTS), in partnership with the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is seeking a Design-Builder to design and construct a new pedestrian bridge over the Ala Wai Canal on the Island of O'ahu. The Ala Wai Pedestrian Bridge will have a clear span of approximately three hundred (300) feet and will connect University Avenue corridor to Waikiki at Kalaimoku Street. The Project addresses a long-standing need for safe, non-motorized access across the canal. The Total Construction and Final Design Funding in the Current Adopted Transportation Improvement Program (Tip) is Fifty Five Million, Two Hundred Eighty Thousand and No/00 Dollars ($55,280,000.00). The Project consists primarily of a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge connecting the Waikiki McCully, and neighborhoods, knitting together businesses, parks, schools, and recreational activities. With a clear span across the canal of approximately three hundred (300) feet, the Ala Wai Bridge will be a complex structure and Project. In addition to the engineering challenges associated with this bridge type and span length, there are additional complexities related to the Project site. These complexities include limited space for approach construction and temporary construction lay-down areas as well as limitations imposed by adjacent infrastructure, such as the existing and future canal walls, which shall not be impacted by the bridge construction. The approximate Project area is shown in Figure 1 below.
