Current seventh- and eighth-graders in Cedar Rapids will be the first to have access to the new spaces as high school students in the district’s College and Career Pathways program. Background The Cedar Rapids district has been working for years to launch its College and Career Pathways program, which school leaders say will be a way for students to explore their career interests while still in high school. Each high school will offer slightly different pathways — announced in October 2024 — for students to explore and gain experience to determine if it’s the career field for them. The plan received pushback in December 2024 from families who felt the plan needed more time to be developed, leading the district to delay the program by one year. All freshmen at Kennedy, Jefferson and Washington high schools will be required to take a Freshman Seminar as part of a Freshman Academy beginning this fall.
